ヤングアメリカンズが、アメリカ国内でも世界でもその成功が広がっていながら、私たちが知ったのは今年の事でした。私の妻が息子の学校（つくば特別支援学校）でポスターを見つけ、息子が日頃から歌やダンスを楽しんでいると言う事もあり、試してみようと参加を決定しました。実際、何を期待して良いものかよく分からぬまま、ただワクワクしておりました。YAのプログラムに深く関わって行く事と、全体のアクティビティに貢献する方が良いのではと、YAの二人の若者のホストファミリーを受ける事を決めました。YAの長時間ハードな練習スケジュールで、YAの方々との親交や街の案内などは、やや厳しいものがありましたが、ともかくYAのゲストと共に過ごし、食事する機会があった事を嬉しく思います。

私たちは参加している子供達が、英語能力（バイリンガルから全く話せない子供を含む）と、パフォーマンス技術（とても自信のある子供から非常に内気な子供を含む）のレベルが変化して行った事に気づきました。また、特別支援のお子様達が何人かおりましたが、みなさんがたいへん良く面倒を見られ．．．団体行動に含まれるだけでなく、それぞれの子供達がショーで輝くため、能力や個性に合わせて各スペース（持ち場）を与えられたのを見て、非常に感銘を受けました。

３日間のワークショップは子供達にとって完全に変革であり、YAスタッフやボランティアが、様々なデモンストレーション、実践、ゲーム、歌、そしてリハーサルを介してどんなに一生懸命助け、常に走り回っていたのかを客席から見ていました。私たちはYAが優れたパフォーマーであり、また子供達の熱心で気力のある先生達だとはっきり見て取る事が出来、初日の朝は途方も無い安堵のため息がもれました。そうです、このワークショップは専門的に行われ、子供達を信頼できる人に任せられるのです。当初、私たちは合間合間に上達を観る事が出来れば良いと思っていたにも関わらず、どのようにパフォーマンスが形作られていくのかを見る滅多に無い機会でしたので、結局、最初から最後まで観客席に座って観ておりました。３日間ずっと．．．。

YAのワークショップは子供のための（また、親のため）の 高い目標を設定し、それを実現させるために100％の努力を込めて実現させる、
昨今「可能性思考」と呼ばれる事の素晴らしい例でした… YAの３日間のワークショップは、子供と共同作業のショーを作るもので、それは、グループで一緒にパフォーマンスするだけでなく、ソロや、たくさんの子供達の各個性をベースにした注目の演技も作るものです。最も印象的だったのは、YAの途方も無い人数の子供達にそれぞれ一人一人にコーチ指導している場面で、それを私たちが見ていたこともあり、普段恥ずかしがり屋の子供はステージの上で誇らしげにリーダーシップを取っていました。YAのメンバーはまた、最後日のショーの前半に彼ら自身のパフォーマンスを披露しましたが、彼らの才能の力量には更に驚かされました。いったい何人のスーパースターがこの中から産まれるのでしょうか？

日本において教育とは、伝統的に本を読む学習とテストに焦点を当てていますが、YAのワークショップは実行する事で学ぶと言う教育を基本設定された優れた例なのです。そして、それは共同作業と各地域のグループ支援の準備があって学べるものです。あらゆる面で大成功だった事、そしてショーが終わった後、皆さんが笑顔だったのは間違いありません。来年も是非YAに来て頂いて、私たちも参加したいと強く思います。その日まで、私たちの息子は今回のサマーツアー2013を思い出しながら曲を歌って、踊っている事でしょう．．．。

This year was our first time to hear about Young Americans,
though we now know that they have a long and growing
success both in USA and around the world. My wife saw
the poster at my son’s school (Tsukuba school for special
needs kids), and we decided to give it a try since our son
enjoys dancing, singing, and performing in general. We were
excited though really did not know what to expect. We
decided to host a couple of the YA since it seemed like a
good way to both deepen involvement in the program and
contribute to the overall implementation. We were glad to
have had an opportunity to spend time and meals with our
YA guests, though the long and hard practice schedule made
it somewhat challenging to fully get to know them or show
them around the city at all.

We noticed that the participating children had varying degrees
of English ability (from bilingual to none) and performance
experience (from very confident to super shy). Moreover,
there were several kids with special needs, and it was really
quite impressive to watch how well they were all treated… not
only included in all the group activities, but also each given
their own space to shine on the final show, tailored to their
abilities and personalities. This was far exceeding all of our
expectations.

The 3 days workshop was totally transformative for the kids,
and we watched from the audience how the YA staff and
volunteers worked hard and persistently to run through
various demonstrations, practices, games, songs, and
rehearsals. We could clearly see that the YA were both good
performers and very dedicated and motivated teachers for the
children, so there was a tremendous sigh of relief after the
first morning that, yes, this workshop was professionally run
and our kids were in good hands. Although we initially
expected to watch the progress intermittently , we ended up
sitting in the audience for the entire time, all 3 days, since it
was a unique opportunity to see how a performance like this
takes shape.

The YA workshop was for the kids (and also for the parents) a
great example of what has been come to be called
“possibility thinking”… setting a really high goal and then
putting in 100% effort to make it happen. The YA used the 3
day workshop to create a collaborative show with the kids
that included not only all kids performing as a group but also
solo or featured appearances by many of the children on an
individual basis. This was most impressive to see, both
because it required a tremendous amount of 1:1 coaching to
each child by a YA member, and because we got to see our
usually shy and deferential children proudly display their
leadership up on stage. The YA members also put on their
own performance in the first half of the final show and we
were (even more) amazed at the caliber of their talent! …
How many future superstars might come out of this group?

In Japan, education has been traditionally focused on book
learning and tests, but the YA workshops represents an
excellent example of a project-based sort of education that
is learning by doing, and learning by collaboration and
individual risk taking in an environment of group support.
In every way, it was a great success, and this was confirmed
by the smiles on everyone’s faces after the show was over.
We certainly hope the YA will return next year so that we can
take part again. Until then, our son will likely be dancing and
singing the tunes for the remainder of this year.
